Area schools sharing plans for April 8 solar eclipse

Thursday marks two months exactly until the April 8 total solar eclipse that will be experienced in northwest Ohio.

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to flock to the area to witness the once-in-a-lifetime event.

With that, many aspects of daily life, including going to school, will be difficult for students. That is why many schools, including Springfield Local School District, are planning on being closed.

Free hospitality certification sessions held at Terra State Community College

Like many other professions, people who work in hospitality have to stay up to date on certifications to keep working.

That’s why Terra State Community College is using federal funding to offer some classes for free.

Every five years, those in the hospitality industry have to recertify in the ServSafe Ohio Food Handler Course.

Toledo football clinches MAC West title, punches ticket to conference championship game

Last season, Toledo football was able to capture the Mid-American Conference championship, their first since 2017. Now, the Rockets will get the chance to go back-to-back.

UT beat Eastern Michigan 49-23 on Wednesday to clinch the MAC West title and punch their ticket to the conference title game.

The last time the Rockets won consecutive conference championships was when they captured three straight from 1969-71.

Here are the 2023 Ohio Blue Ribbon Schools

OHIO — The U.S. Department of Education designated 19 Ohio schools as Blue Ribbon Schools for 2023 on Tuesday.

The 19 are a part of 353 schools nationwide to receive the designation. The honor is “based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups on assessments,” according to the U.S. Department of Education.

TOLEDO, Ohio — A northwest Ohio rivalry added a new wrinkle when the University of Toledo and Bowling Green State University finished tied in the “Best Colleges” rankings released by the U.S. News & World Report.

UT and BGSU were both ranked at No. 280 for best national universities and at No. 151 for top public schools.

Toledo Public Schools announces new Electric Vehicle Center

TOLEDO, Ohio — Toledo Public Schools said Wednesday it will break ground on a $5.7 million Electric Vehicle Center on the Toledo Technology Academy (TTA) campus.

TPS Superintendent Romules Durant said the project is a team approach and was spearheaded by U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur, D-Toledo, who secured $1.25 million in federal funding for the new center.

“For America to remain a leader and for Toledo to be at the center in the new propulsion age and the new age of clean energy and power, we have to educate to the future,” Kaptur said.

Stranahan Elementary planning Lucas County’s first inclusive school playground

TOLEDO, Ohio — The PTA at Stranahan Elementary School, in the Sylvania school district, is planning an inclusive playground.

PTA officials said the playgrounds promote kindness, diversity and inclusivity as well as build friendships.

PTA president Tara Haye said the project is expected to cost $800,000, which includes turf, equipment and installation.

What are the top public high schools in Ohio and Michigan? Check out this year’s U.S. News and World Report rankings

TOLEDO, Ohio — U.S. News and World Report released its rankings of public high schools this week, with some local districts rating highly in the annual listing.

In Ohio, Ottawa Hills was the top-ranked local high school, landing in the 10th spot.

Perrysburg High School ranked 51st, Sylvania Northview ranked 65th, Maumee High school ranked 86th and Hicksville High School ranked 89th.
