ODOT holds groundbreaking for I-475 widening project

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – The Ohio Department of Transportation held a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday for the I-475 widening project that will add a new interchange at US-20A in Maumee.

It’s a project that’s been in the works for over 30 years. ODOT Director Jack Marchbanks said after the long process of coming up with the project, there’s never been a better time to start.

“This is a promise kept and its at the right time, at the right time ‘cause the growth is here and its justifiable at every level,” Marchbanks said.

A tortoise on the loose finds her way home

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – South Toledo residents know all about Quinn the tortoise. Well, She’s finally back home after she escaped from her backyard to wander the city traveling five miles.

Quinn is quite the shell-ebrity, as she’s called the neighborhood surrounding Durango Drive home for 10 years.

While Quinn’s been known to escape home from time to time, her most recent venture outdoors left her owner Malcolm Mann worried as she vanished for three days – her longest stretch to date.

University of Toledo gets new campus mapping tech to detect underground utilities

TOLEDO, Ohio — With radars that can see through the ground, and electromagnetic devices, the University of Toledo is receiving a new and improved map of its underground utilities to help in the future.

“We do a lot of digging around here. Whether it’s through new projects or we have leaks somewhere that we got to dig, we want to make sure we mark any utilities so we don’t get into some of the unknowns as we dig,” explained Dan Perry, manager of UT electrical maintenance.

Alongside the group Ground Penetrating Radar Systems, the University of Toledo was able to use the GPRS’ latest technology to find underground pipes they usually wouldn’t have and create a map of where they are all located.

Toledo youth flag football team goes undefeated at regionals, punches ticket to national tournament

The NWO Rockets from the 8U League earned a trip to the national tournament during the week of the NFL’s Pro Bowl.

TOLEDO, Ohio — The newly-created 8U NWO Rockets, a team who just started playing together, traveled to Green Bay, Wisconsin for a regional tournament held at the Green Bay Packers facility.

Not only did they take in the glamour of NFL resources; the team never lost.

After some thought, he had a change of heart and sport.

Condado Tacos introduces summer menu options, including three new margaritas

TOLEDO, Ohio — Condado Tacos is debuting new food and drink options for the summer.

The Columbus-based chain is introducing a chicken bacon ranch taco and mango guacamole dip. There are also three new margarita options: the La Verdita, Guava Lemonada and Jamaica Jamaica.

The LaVerdita calls for a blend of pineapple juice, cilantro, mint, jalapeno and lime juice. The Guava Lemonada is made with guava puree, and the Jamaica Jamaica is made with hibiscus puree.

Local Sports: Bedford Black Ops brings home Ohio state championship

NEW ALBANY, Ohio – The Bedford Black Ops team won the 10-U Nation’s Baseball Ohio State Championship recently.

The team went 2-0-1 in pool play with Bodie Russow, Viktor Bensch, Vinny Brescol and Vayda Benore leading the way.

Strong performances by Levi Sparks, Jaxon Foster and Braylon Frank led to two more wins and a spot in the semifinals.

The Black Ops won that game behind the pitching of Eli Rothenbuhler then beat the Twinsburg Tigers 10-4 in the finals.

Book fair at Glass City Metropark to offer thousands of free reading opportunities

Metroparks Toledo and the Toledo Federation of Teachers are teaming up to give away 40,000 books.

Over 20 pallets of books for readers of all ages will be offered to families for free throughout this summer.

Family Literacy & Book Fair will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Glass City Metropark Enrichment Center on 815 Front St. where families can pick out up to 10 books per child. Educators can take up to 40.

School and community staff must preregister for the book fair at firstbook.org/aft.

More Toledoans riding electric scooters, busses as gas prices increase

TOLEDO, Ohio — Gas prices have seen record highs this summer. Despite a slight relief after gallons costing upwards of $5, people are getting creative to get around and save money.

Data from both VEO scooters and Toledo Area Regional Transit Authority shows usage of electric scooters and bus ridership is up in Toledo right now, both companies said.

Leaders from VEO evaluated ridership data over the past few weeks and have seen increasing ridership correlate with increasing gas prices.

Since the beginning of 2022 in Toledo, people are taking longer trips on the scooters, not just downtown joy rides, according to VEO data.
