Toledo Zoo welcomes baby elephant

The Toledo Zoo is welcoming a new member to its family with the birth of a baby elephant.

African elephant Renee gave birth to a male elephant on Feb. 17, 2024, who now weighs 280 lbs. Renee and her calf are in excellent health and zoo staff continues to monitor their wellbeing, a statement from the zoo said.

The Toledo Zoo is launching a naming contest where the public can donate to pick their favorite name. The choices include Leap, Link, Loki, Leif, and Leo. The contest starts Friday, March 1, and closes at 11:59 p.m. on March 14.

Kids vs. cops chess tournament helps youth learn about police in friendly setting

Kids and cops squared off in a friendly game of chess for nearly two hours Wednesday at the Jones Leadership Academy of Business in Toledo.

The tournament, in its second year, wasn’t just to have fun and crown some winners, though. The event was hosted by the Toledo Public Schools Department of Public Safety and the Lucas County Sheriff’s Department to help youth bond with law enforcement and learn more about what they do.

Chess holds a special place in the heart of Rohan Padhye, who has played the game for about 10 years. Through playing with the cops, he said he has learned a lot and taken away life lessons he’ll never forget.

Community leaders talk Black History Month, legacy in the Glass City

Leaders within the Toledo community said Black History Month is all about knowing where we come from and where we are headed as a nation.

“We have to talk about the people that have definitely impacted us the most and never leave them out,” Toledo City Councilwoman Vanice Williams said.

Williams said you can’t tell American history without Black history.

Championship International Wrestling hosting pro wrestling show Sunday in Toledo

Professional wrestling fans have an opportunity to witness Championship International Wrestling in Toledo on Sunday.

The Midwest regional promotion’s show is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. at St. Clement Hall on Tremainsville Road. The main event will see Michael Elgin, known for his time in New Japan Pro Wrestling and Ring of Honor, face off against reigning CIW Heavyweight Champion Malice for the belt.

Along with local Toledo talent like Kenny Urban, who brings a goose to his matches, CIW attracts overseas talent from countries as far away as Japan, too.

Eclipse déjà vu? Why April 8 will be different than the 1994 eclipse

If you’re at least 30 years old, this upcoming eclipse will be third you’ve experienced in the Toledo area in your lifetime. But this time around will be different, as it will be the first total solar eclipse here since 1806.

The most recent eclipse in 2017 was just a partial eclipse locally, a glancing blow. In 1994, an annular eclipse occurred which blocked most of the sunlight – but not completely. And after April 8, another total eclipse won’t happen again here until 2099.

Restaurant Week Toledo set to begin Monday

Over 40 local restaurants are preparing for Restaurant Week Toledo, the annual event that’s set to start Monday, Feb. 26.

Restaurant Week Toledo gives the community the opportunity to try dozens of locally owned restaurants around the area with discounted prices, while also being able to support Toledo youth.

Leadership Toledo’s tuition-free youth program is receiving a portion of participating restaurants’ profits that will be donated to its high-impact program for aspiring young leaders.

Toledo’s first Black-owned barber college nearing one year old

James Chestnutt, better known as Kutt’em Cheen, is currently a student at Topp Of The Line Barber College. He’s 27 years old and becoming a barber has always been on his mind.

“I’ve always been thinking about being a barber,” Chestnutt said. “My dad’s a barber, my uncle’s a barber, so it’s always been in my blood.”

He said he came to T.O.L. Barber College in south Toledo with the hopes of one day opening up his own barber shop business.

WWE Raw coming to Toledo in June

WWE will make a summer stop in the Glass City.

The Huntington Center will host the professional wrestling company’s flagship Monday night program, Raw, on June 10, 2024. The show will start at 7:30 p.m. and doors will open at 6 p.m.

Tickets start at $25 and are on sale now at the Huntington Center box office and Ticketmaster.com, according to the Huntington Center’s website.

“Pretty Woman: The Musical”: April 3-6, 2025

Toledo GROWs to host 20th annual Seed Swap

Toledo GROWs is hosting its 20th annual Seed Swap this weekend.

The event will take place on Feb. 24 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Scott High School located at 2400 Collingwood Blvd. The event is free and open to the public.

According to organizers, at the event, attendees will receive free seeds and gardening information including watering tips, planting schedules, composting tips and more.
