Toledo City Council hears progress on free pre-kindergarten program

TOLEDO, Ohio — Hope Toledo President John C. Jones spoke before Toledo City Council’s Finance Committee Thursday about the progress of the organization’s free pre-kindergarten program.

Toledo City Council member Katie Moline and others on the finance committee continued to offer their support for free pre-K, but Moline said the issue is securing sustainable funding before American Rescue Plan Act dollars run out.

Building Better Schools : Toledo Symphony honors Music Teacher

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) -The Toledo Symphony was built on the dedication of music educators globally, which is every year the organization honors a deserving teacher.

This year the symphony honors Starr Elementary’s Megan Porter for its Toledo Symphony’s Outstanding Music Educator Award.

Porter told 13abc that she was shocked when she first heard the news.

“I have to tell you I was just so shocked to find out that I was a finalist, but, I actually have won. I can’t believe it,” Porter said.

Former students reminisce over days spent at three Toledo schools, who welcomed their last students this week

TOLEDO, Ohio — The holiday weekend started on a bittersweet note for former students of Wernert, Shoreland, and Jackman Elementary in west and north Toledo.

On Saturday morning, just days after the schools let out their last students for the summer, people were invited out for one last look at the schools, all three of which are being retired from service as Washington Local Schools builds two replacement schools.

Former Wernert student Tom Hillabrand remembers the concerts, plays and school assemblies held in the buildings auditorium and wanted to sit in the built-in seats one last time.

He also remembered how hot the century-old building got at the end of the school year.
