Toledo GROWs to host 20th annual Seed Swap

Toledo GROWs is hosting its 20th annual Seed Swap this weekend.

The event will take place on Feb. 24 from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Scott High School located at 2400 Collingwood Blvd. The event is free and open to the public.

According to organizers, at the event, attendees will receive free seeds and gardening information including watering tips, planting schedules, composting tips and more.

‘A Night of Black Voices’ to feature Toledo’s most talented Black vocalists this weekend

Stone Productions and the Collingwood Arts Center is presenting ‘Not Your Average Ensemble – A Night of Black Voices’ this weekend in Toledo.

The event will take place on Feb. 24 and Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. at the Collingwood Arts Center located at 2413 Collingwood Blvd.

Organizers say ‘A Night of Black Voices’ is a jukebox cabaret that will feature individual and group numbers performed by some of Toledo’s most talented Black vocalists. Tickets for the event are $15 online or $20 at the door.

Local church holds expo to spotlight Black-owned businesses

A local church is honoring Black History Month by uplifting and amplifying Black-owned businesses.

One business owner tells 13 Action News its fulfilling to know that her church is there for her.

“My church has been such a great support in my business,” said Tyla Jackson, Dynasty Child Care Center owner. “They’re always wearing my t-shirts telling people about my daycare. We offer child care to low income families.”

Heart Gallery showcases importance of adoption

The Heart Gallery travels around northwest Ohio to spread awareness about adoption.

Wendy Spoerl, the president of the Adopt America Network in Toledo, on Thursday said the exhibit is about placing kids in homes who are in foster care.

“The libraries are wonderful because we can get to a lot of different parts of the Toledo community and spread this message more broadly,” Spoerl said.

Say it with a barbershop quartet; Local group spreads Valentine’s Day love with a song

In Ottawa Hills Wednesday, the home of Lanette Cornell was the site of a special Valentine’s Day performance meant to showcase love.

Cornell was treated to a song, along with desserts, a flower and a card, a package delivered from “The Voices of Harmony.”

The barbershop quartet, based out of Alliance Church in Bowling Green, travels around the northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan region, hired by people to sing for their significant others.

“The more love you put into that food, the better people will be able to connect with it,” Young said.

Young is a Black business owner who has worked for 11 years with his family in Toledo. Being a Black business owner comes with unique challenges, including having a Black business, Young said.

Toledo patient receives breakthrough brain treatment

TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – A Toledo patient was part of a clinical trial aimed at treating brain bleeds with the goal of avoiding repeat surgeries.

The EMBOLISE clinical trial tested whether a new treatment for subdural hematomas, which are brain bleeds most frequently caused by trauma, and is the most common reason for neurosurgery, would lead to lower chances of requiring additional surgery.

“Shutting down this blood vessel with medical glue can actually result in reducing the risk of reaccumulation of blood or the blood becoming more significant to the point where it would require a second surgical evacuation,” said Dr. Mouhammad Jumaa.

Owens Corning: Q4 Earnings Snapshot

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — Owens Corning (OC) on Wednesday reported fourth-quarter profit of $131 million.

The Toledo, Ohio-based company said it had profit of $1.46 per share. Earnings, adjusted for pretax expenses, came to $3.21 per share.

The results exceeded Wall Street expectations. The average estimate of five analysts surveyed by Zacks Investment Research was for earnings of $2.82 per share.

City of Toledo planning for total solar eclipse tourism

A historic total solar eclipse is soon approaching and a portion of northwest Ohio has prime viewing potential.

While the city of Toledo is not in center of the path of totality like part of our region, it will still experience the total solar eclipse.

That means people worldwide will be flocking to the Glass City and the surrounding areas to view the spectacle, and city of Toledo officials have been preparing for months for the possible uptick in tourism.

Whether a person is looking for the fanciest night out or just offering a simple gesture, the Valentine’s Day celebration next week is expected to draw many northwest Ohioans to local businesses.

In the world of food, restaurants like Georgio’s Café International on North Superior Street in Toledo are expecting a sold-out dining room, but reservations are going to be a bit harder this year to get.

“We have problems with staffing, so the reservations; we will stop because we only have so many waitresses,” head chef and owner George Kamilaris said. “Then the kitchen is just me and another person, and my brother, after he seats all the other reservations, he comes and helps me, so it’s the same problem everyone else has.”
