Local church holds expo to spotlight Black-owned businesses

A local church is honoring Black History Month by uplifting and amplifying Black-owned businesses.

One business owner tells 13 Action News its fulfilling to know that her church is there for her.

“My church has been such a great support in my business,” said Tyla Jackson, Dynasty Child Care Center owner. “They’re always wearing my t-shirts telling people about my daycare. We offer child care to low income families.”

Flavorful fare for future generations: J’Mae’s Home Cooking serving up food for the soul

Jaleo Young is the owner of J’Mae’s Home Cooking. For him, it’s about the legacy and love his family puts into the food he serves the community.

“The more love you put into that food, the better people will be able to connect with it,” Young said.

Young is a Black business owner who has worked for 11 years with his family in Toledo. Being a Black business owner comes with unique challenges, including having a Black business, Young said.

‘You can’t eat just one’ | Toledo bakery rising to Tuesday’s demand for paczki

Bakery Unlimited “kneaded” all the help it could get on Monday as workers prepared for Fat Tuesday’s paczki rush.

Fat Tuesday is the biggest day of the year for the business as people come in to buy paczki, said head baker Ryan Watson. The bakery has been preparing for the day for over three weeks.

“We’re doing a lot today,” Watson said. “We’re doing about 1,200 dozen paczki today, and we’ll probably do the same amount if not more tomorrow.”

“Typically we’re pretty busy on Super Bowl day,” Jaleo Young, manager of J’Mae’s Home Cooking said. “We go through plenty of wings.”

Whether a person is looking for the fanciest night out or just offering a simple gesture, the Valentine’s Day celebration next week is expected to draw many northwest Ohioans to local businesses.

In the world of food, restaurants like Georgio’s Café International on North Superior Street in Toledo are expecting a sold-out dining room, but reservations are going to be a bit harder this year to get.

“We have problems with staffing, so the reservations; we will stop because we only have so many waitresses,” head chef and owner George Kamilaris said. “Then the kitchen is just me and another person, and my brother, after he seats all the other reservations, he comes and helps me, so it’s the same problem everyone else has.”

This restaurant in Toledo, Ohio recently celebrated its grand opening

A new wine bar offering food has come to Toledo.

In late January, Golden Hind Wine Bar celebrated its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, according to this social media post from Toledo Regional Chamber of Commerce. Patrons can find Golden Hind in Toledo at 915 N Summit St. Prior to the grand opening, the wine bar started its soft opening phase on October 31, per this post from Golden Hind’s social media account.

Golden Hind’s menu, of course, includes a variety of wine offerings. The restaurant offers some white wines, a selection of red wines, rosé, and dessert wines. If you don’t drink alcohol, the eatery also serves a range of loose leaf teas and soft drinks.

Pro Golf Fairways to open third location in downtown Toledo

Pro Golf Fairways co-owner and contractor, Robert Walsh, was at the driving range when he met his current business partner, Jeff Manore. The reason they met? Bad golf.

“About twelve, thirteen years ago I was golfing so terribly that I went to the driving range and one of the patrons I about hit, told me to go back to basics. I realized I didn’t know the basics, so I went down there, and Jeff was giving lessons, and the rest is history,” said Walsh.

Years later, Walsh and Manore have opened two multisport simulator locations in the area. Now, they’re welcoming another to downtown Toledo.

A new restaurant has opened for business in Toledo.

Are you in the mood for Mexican fare? If the answer is yes, you might want to know about Los Agaves Mexican Restaurant, which is a new restaurant that opened its doors in Toledo. According to the restaurant’s social media account, Los Agaves – which can be found at 30 E Alexis Rd – started its soft opening phase on January 19 with a grand opening planned for later in the year.

Before opening its new brick-and-mortar location on Alexis Road, Los Agaves started – and continues to operate – as a food truck. The brick-and-mortar restaurant’s menu includes starters like mozzarella sticks, guacamole, bean dip, cheese dip, and Mexican fries, which are loaded with your choice of meat, cheese, pico de gallo, bacon, and sour cream.

Coffee shop, new steakhouse opening at The Docks

Two new additions are coming soon to the restaurant scene in east Toledo.

Glass City Steakhouse is set to open Feb. 13, at The Docks at International Park. The steakhouse will fill a vacancy left by Boardwalk B&G, which opened in early October and closed abruptly in late November.

The spot was also the former location of Hamburger Mary’s before it relocated to N. Huron Street in downtown Toledo.

Toledo-based apparel business, Walmart to collaborate for Black History Month

Toledo-based business “Midwest Kids” is collaborating with Walmart for an apparel collection designed in tribute to Black History Month, Walmart announced in a press release Monday.

Beginning Monday on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, four uniquely designed items will be available in Toledo stores and online, including a t-shirt and hoodie. The theme of the collection is “Planting Seeds and Giving Flowers Daily,” according to the release.
