Days left to get tickets for Greater Toledo Home Giveaway

There’s just a few days left to get your tickets for the Greater Toledo Home Giveaway.

The purchase of a $100 ticket is your opportunity to win a brand new Sylvania Township home valued at $650,000 all while helping local pediatric patients. Proceeds benefit kids at the ProMedica Russel J. Ebeid Children’s Hospital.

The last day to buy a ticket is May 31 and the drawing is scheduled for June 14. Tickets are available at the link here. You can have them mailed to you or you can choose to pick them up at Savage and Associates.

Annual Toledo Police memorial honors fallen officers

Toledo Police held its annual memorial service Tuesday, honoring all of the officers who have given their lives in service to the community.

The event was held at Civic Center Mall in downtown Toledo Tuesday morning. TPD says the officers are never forgotten and their names are etched into a plaque.

Thirty officers have been lost in the line of duty, according to the department’s website.

International Space Station visible for 7 minutes on Sunday night

While you are looking skyward on Sunday trying to catch one last glimpse of the Northern Lights, keep your eyes peeled for something much more common but that you might not realize is visible to the naked eye.

For a period of seven minutes, between 10:08 and 10:15 p.m., the International Space Station (ISS) will traverse the sky as it moves from the West Southwest sky to the Northeast.

The ISS will be at a maximum height of 52° above the horizon. (For reference, the horizon is 0° and straight overhead is 90°.)

Unlike in the comics, no caped crusader — accompanied by a “Holy Toledo” quipping sidekick — swooped in to save the day when tragedy struck the Maumee State Forest All Purpose Vehicle area near Toledo, Ohio…so Matt Bucher felt called to step up.

Bucher, who grew up riding in the Maumee State Forest, started the Toledo Trail Riders to help better the forest’s public riding area after his dad witnessed the deaths of two riders involved in a high-speed collision.

“I saw the effect of what those incidents and tragedies did to my dad,” Bucher said. “In 2008, I said maybe we can do something about this.”

Runners pound the pavement at 47th Glass City Marathon

The 47th annual Glass City Marathon began warm and muggy as thousands of runners stood ready to begin the race.

And as the sound of a bullhorn filled the air, they were off.

Surrounding the course, friends and family waited in anticipation to cheer on their runner.

Metroparks Meetup: 15,000 trees being planted across Toledo

Over the next few days, 15,000 trees will be planted across the city. They are working to reforest open areas in some of the parks around town.

This tree-planting operation is just the start of a big initiative and the city of Toledo.

“The contractors are working to plant some of these trees, we also have our forest service crew, and we’re also working with some Metroparks volunteers doing some planting here,” explained Jay Wright, Director of Conservation Science for Metroparks Toledo. “We have people staking the trees, digging the holes for the trees, putting the trees in, and then putting tree shelters around the trees to protect them from deer browsing.”

Glass City Record Show holds second event of the year Sunday

The Glass City Record Show held its second show of the year today at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Toledo.

The show, which was held from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m., featured nearly 50 tables of music, including records, CDs, 8 tracks, posters, T-shirts and other music-themed memorabilia.

Organizers say over 700 people attended the season opener back in February, and their goal was for around 500 people today.

Dozens of runners representing the Toledo area in difficult qualifying year for Boston Marathon

Thirty thousand people are running in the Boston Marathon this year, and 53 of them are from the Toledo area.

Runners from Toledo, Ottawa Hills, Oregon, Perrysburg, Maumee, Sylvania, Bryan, Waterville, Holland, Archbold, Sherwood, Edon, Ypsilanti, Bowling Green, Port Clinton, Ottowa Lake, Clinton and Adrian are all representing Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan in the big race.

Members of the Toledo Roadrunners Club say this year was an especially difficult year to qualify for the Boston Marathon, which makes the race all the more special.
