Toledo Zoo welcomes baby elephant

The Toledo Zoo is welcoming a new member to its family with the birth of a baby elephant.

African elephant Renee gave birth to a male elephant on Feb. 17, 2024, who now weighs 280 lbs. Renee and her calf are in excellent health and zoo staff continues to monitor their wellbeing, a statement from the zoo said.

The Toledo Zoo is launching a naming contest where the public can donate to pick their favorite name. The choices include Leap, Link, Loki, Leif, and Leo. The contest starts Friday, March 1, and closes at 11:59 p.m. on March 14.

‘Not hallucinating:’ Hundreds of swans in Ohio field

Swans…so many swans… in one field.

Pictures shared on social media by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources show a large flock of the large birds in a field just off State Route 2 near the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge.

Mobile Meals of Toledo to deliver food for pets

Mobile Meals of Toledo is delivering food on Jan. 30 and 31, to over 45 clients who requested pet food.

The pet program was started to eliminate meal clients feeding their pets with their food. Mobil Meals of Toledo is hoping that in doing so, the clients and their pets can eat their own food.

According to a press release from Mobile Meals of Toledo, 45 clients requested food for their pets. The pets include; 48 dogs, 50 cats, two rabbits and two birds.

Top 100 Most Pet-Friendly Cities in U.S. includes 4 in Ohio

About 70 percent of U.S. households – or 90.5 million families – own a pet, be it a dog, cat, fish, bird, reptile or horse, according to the 2021-22 National Pet Owners Survey.

Some U.S. cities, however, are more pet-friendly than others.

Fortunately for those in Ohio, four of the Top 100 most pet-friendly cities in the U.S. are located here in the Buckeye State, according to WalletHub.

Lucas County Canine Care & Control, commissioners break ground on new facility

TOLEDO, Ohio — Lucas County Commissioners held a groundbreaking Monday at the site of the new, “state-of-the-art” Lucas County Canine Care & Control facility.

The future 40,000-square foot shelter will be located at 1301 Monroe Street near 13th Street and is estimated to cost $31.1 million.

Twin tiger cubs born at Ohio zoo

The Toledo Zoo is celebrating not one tiger cub birth, but two.

Twin tiger cubs were born at the Toledo Zoo in July, the zoo announced in a post to their social media pages.

The zoo welcomed the twin Amur tigers on July 20. The cubs were born to mom, Talya and dad Titan. The two had also welcomed twins in 2021.

‘Paw-sitively exciting’: Ohio zoo welcomes twin Siberian tiger cubs

The Toledo Zoo in Ohio is celebrating after welcoming twin tiger cubs.

The babies were born on July 20 and most recently weighed in at 15 and 16 pounds, the zoo announced Thursday.

“We’ve got paw-sitively exciting news,” the zoo wrote in a Facebook post.

Toledo Zoo welcomes baby giraffe ‘Franklin’

TOLEDO, Ohio — The Toledo Zoo has welcomed a baby giraffe as the latest edition to the herd, according to a social media post from the organization.

The calf, Franklin, was born to mother, Tuli, and father, Rocket, on Saturday. Tuli completed the “tall task” of giving birth to a 165 lb. calf. Zookeepers said a neonatal exam found both mother and baby were doing well off-exhibit.

Zookeepers will introduce Franklin to the rest of the herd when they deem he is ready; following that, Zoo visitors can meet Franklin at the Africa exhibit later this month.
