Northeast Ohio church plans to eliminate $1 million in medical debt

ELYRIA, Ohio — Nathan Russell enjoys being a pastor.

“When I went to bed at night and when I got up in the morning, I knew I wanted to be a pastor,” he said.

He said becoming one was a calling.

Now, after three years of being the senior pastor at the Washington Avenue Christian Church in Elyria, he said the congregation has come up with a new way to help those struggling through financial hardship. They are partnering with the national nonprofit RIP Medical Debt.

“It brings good news to those who are impoverished,” he said. “That’s what Jesus would have us do.”
